Biography
Steamroller's style of rock and roll is the product of 14 years of collaboration between the band's two singer-guitarists, Kevin Dodds and Michael McLellan, who have played music together since the ages of 12. Bassist Nate Hickman joined them only two years later, and drummer BrandonElizondo, a former member of Austin's Rhythm Child (whose credits included an opening spot for Blues Traveler), joined the group in April of 1996.
Steamroller is a headlining act at several premier clubs in their homebase of Austin, Texas, as well as in Houston and Dallas. The group has played such Texas venues as The Austin Music Hall, Rockefeller's, Club Dada, and the Dixie Theater. The band has released three full-length, independent CDs, including their latest, Razzle Dazzle. The band enjoys airplay on several Texas radio stations (KLBJ-FM, KGSR-FM, KRAD-FM), and has even been played as far as Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Boston. The band continues to be effectively self-managed. Steamroller headlines regularly at Austin's renowned live music club, Steamboat. The band mostly plays in Texas, but has played in surrounding states including Arkansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Mississippi. In 1998 the band won the HORDE tour's Band to Band Combat competition, which granted them two spots on the tour in both Oklahoma City and in Austin. The band shared the bill on the HORDE tour with such acts as The Smashing Pumpkins, Blues Traveler, Fastball, Ben Harper, Barenaked Ladies, and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies.
Since June of 1994, Steamroller has played over 300 gigs in Austin, Boulder, Bryan/College Station, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Fayetteville, Houston, Oklahoma City, Oxford, San Antonio, San Marcos and Waco, with some shows lasting as long as four-and-a-half hours. Steamroller maintained a residency at the Black Cat Lounge (the original stomping ground of such acts as Ian Moore, Soulhat, the Ugly Americans and Sister 7) on Austin's famous Sixth Street for two full years, including the headlining spot on Saturday nights for well over a year. The band has over 50 original songs and continues to write prolifically.
Steamroller released a self-titled debut CD on their own music label, Redwood Records, in July of 1995. The CD was reviewed in the Austin Chronicle by Andy Langer, who said, "Steamroller's songwriting shows a surprisingly mature knack for lazy grooves and jangly guitar dynamics." Sales of Steamroller have continually improved, which has paved the way for the release of their second self-produced CD, Cabin Fever, in May of 1997. Within one week of its release, Cabin Fever was the #2 best-selling local CD at Austin's Tower Records, beating out other local artists supported by major labels. In October of 1998, Steamroller released their third CD, Razzle Dazzle.
KLBJ 93.7 FM in Austin has given several Steamroller tracks a generous amount of airplay over the past two years. KLBJ has featured the band on three radio programs, All Access, The Blue Plate Special, and Local Licks Live, and has regularly appeared on the award-winning KLBJ morning show, Dudley & Bob w/Debra. The band was also featured on KLBJ's Local Licks Live 1997 CD. In addition, KLBJ made the band part of its live music feature, The Acoustic Series at the Iron Cactus. Steamroller also enjoys airplay on Austin's contemporary KGSR 107.1 FM. The band has been featured on television several times, including performances on the Austin Music Network, ACTV's Virtual Noise, and even live on KXAN News 36 (NBC affiliate). The group was also the subject of a feature articles in The Austin-American Statesman, as well as in Mike's Feedback, a local Austin music magazine.
