MO' MUSIC MUSTS!

October '97

By Chris Mosser

Don't miss these or you'll Die!!

EL FLACO
See The Review

Emo's/Friday October 3
Triple Crown/Friday October 17
Liberty Lunch/Saturday October 25

Any or all will do ya for the best damn band in town. Emo's is arguable El Flaco's home base, San Marcos' Triple Crown is a darn enjoyable change of pace, and the boys share the Liberty Lunch stage with Retarted Elf and Agony Column, making for a nice convenient trip back through time to when Austin was really cool - like right before you got here.

RECKLESS KELLY
Stubb's BBQ/Friday October 10

Oh, how we missed Reckless Kelly over the long, hot summer, but now we may rejoice, for lo, they return to their winter digs. Not only that, but they're back with their debut record (if you don't count that tape, which I'll be keeping), the release of which will be raucously celebrated at this here show with the help of The Damnations. Plus another reason to come to Stubb's early: their first annual crawfish boil, featuring the music of The Radiators and Papa Mali.

SOULHAT
Stubb's BBQ/Saturday October 11

The late, great Soulhat is no longer late and from what I hear, the absence of guitarist Bill Cassis hasn't changed the great part. Intact are one of Austin's finest-ever rhythm sections - Brian Walsh on the bass and the legendary Frosty on the kit - and apparently Kevin McKinney has had some time to develop his lead. Get there early as a sellout is likely.

NANCI GRIFFITH
Austin Music Hall/Saturday October 18

Nashville can borrow her, but Nanci is ours, dammit, at least for one night. This show is likely to feature a healthy slice from Blue Roses From The Moons, but no Nanci show would be complete without a guided tour of her fine repertoire. An excellent first date opportunity that would only be better at the Backyard.

COURSE OF EMPIRE
Electric Lounge/Saturday October 25

Dallas' Course Of Empire have continued to gig sporadically, but have so far kept us waiting on the follow-up to their brilliant Initiation CD from 1994. Their live gigs are an orgy of pounding guitars and pounding tribal rhythms that are unmatched by any of their peers, mainly because their peers do it with help from Microsoft. The COE twin-drummer concept is fantastic live, and I find myself surprised that more bands of this ilk haven't explored it.
