The first thing you notice is how clean the restaurant is. High ceilings and wood walls covered with old signs create a real Texas roadhouse ambiance as you order from the extensive menu. A stack of mesquite wood out back authenticated the fact that this place serves real Texas Bar-B-Cue.
We tried the four meat Texas Sampler ($9.99) with brisket, pork loin, ham and sausage, and a pound of pork ribs ($8.29). For side dishes we ordered beans ($1.09), cole slaw ($1.09), baked potato and corn on the cob (came with the platter). Though a self-serve soda fountain was available, we selected bottled beer and fruit drinks from the cooler.
Almost as soon as we sat down - after selecting super fresh sliced onions, pickles and garnishes - our order was ready. We picked it up and carried it to a clean comfortable picnic style table. A dozen other people arrived and received some of the promptest service imaginable. As one person took orders at the counter, another came out front to write down selections from those standing in line.
Each of the meats on the Texas Sampler was cooked to perfection - never frozen, tender and juicy - and was trimmed incredibly lean and firm. You could tell from the first bite that these folks really know what they are doing. The brisket and pork loin were truly exceptional.
The sauce (a touchstone by which every Bar-B-Cue restaurant is judged) is some of the richest, thickest, most flavorful available, especially designed to enhance the wood-smoked meats. The pork ribs were also cooked to perfection and were the leanest I'd ever seen.

The cole slaw was good, but not great (needed a little more red cabbage) and so were the potato and beans. But, the corn had a special flavor not found anywhere.
No sooner had our plates been relieved of their ample portions than did a wait person appear to take them away as we enjoyed the homemade cherry cobbler ($1.89) and banana pudding ($1.29).
"Customer satisfaction is our main concern," says long time Austin restaurateur, Igor Bastidas, who manages the 5th street location. "We want people to come back and bring their friends. We put a lot of love into everything we serve."
Rest assured that all of us will be back. I hunger for Pok-e-Jo's already.
