The Center for Women & Their Work

promotes the work of women artists through a range of services and multi-arts/cultural programming. Since its incorporation in 1978, the Center for Women & Their Work's programs have been based on three major objectives:

· To promote greater recognition and appreciation of women's contributions to cultural life;
· To provide financial and technical support for artists, and ;
· To present innovative performances and exhibitions which reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity of the region.

"Eye of the Beholder" (right), is a mixed media assemblage by Betye Saar. This work was one of many in Saar's exhibition, Personal Icons presented by Women & Their Work last August.

Their latest exhibition was Women in Print . With 39 contemporary American artists, the exhibitiond included still life, landscape and abstract images created through a variety of methods such as etching, screen print, woodcut, pochoir (stencil), monotype and color lithography. Among the artist included in Women in Print were: Hollis Sigler, April Gornik, Louise Nevelson and John Mitchell as well as Austin artist, Katherine Brimberry. The 3M Corporate Art Program began in 1974 as an experiment to enhance the work place and has grown to include some 3,000 original pieces of art. Women in Print is the first traveling exhibition from the 3M collection.

A Group Exhibition including Susan Harrington, Terry Thornton and Janet Tyson will open September 26 - November 2. Thematic affinities such as use of drawing, tracing paper and tape in pursuit of a poetic and personal imagery and elusive interplays of figure and ground. Harrington is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Texas Christian University. Thornton is currently a visiting Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Arlington. Tyson is currently an art critic for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. _ _ _
