Mo Music Musts

May 1998
Austin, Tx

By Chris Mosser

REVEREND HORTON HEAT
Austin Music Hall/Saturday May 2

It's an old-style Texas cowpunk reunion as the Rev comes to Austin to show us small town-types how they do things up in Big D. Tagging along are fellow Metroplexers the Old '97s, who have been wowing folks over at Stubb's for quite some time and are getting their message across nationwide lately. If nothing else, this show should produce one of the most diverse audiences of the year as the cowboys and the punks compete with the frat boys for breathing room.

7TH ANNUAL MOTHER EARTH'S FESTIVAL
La Zona Rosa/Sunday May 10

Besides the fact that Billy White has skipped town since last year, the lineup for the Mother Earth's Fest remains largely intact. Impressive, considering that one of its cornerstone bands - Sunflower - broke up a few months back, and one of its others -

Vallejo - have just wrapped up their sophomore effort for TVT and are practically rock stars now. Good to see that home is where the heart is, boys.

Breedlove are back too, though we're still waiting for their second record (what's the deal?). A needed injection of diversity comes from the mighty M.C. Overlord, and worthy addition Two Minute Sinatra will appear as well. One major difference this year is the location, and without taking sides, La Zona's air conditioning will be a blessing. I have a hard time setting foot in Liberty Lunch between March and September. More good news: all the cash goes to Any Baby Can.

MORNINGWOOD
Flamingo Cantina/Thursday May 14

Thursdays in May are kickin' at the Cantina, and I'm looking forward to seeing the exploits of Austin's most dangerous estrogen squad on the bigger stage at Flamingo, rather than the ridiculously cramped Hole In The Wall. Your girlfriend will squeal with glee (and so will I) as Kathy Ziegler and crew lay down an hour of pure entertainment, pure and simple. Incestuous Town, indeed, and I wish. The Metzlers and The Preverts open.

SINIS
Flamingo Cantina/Thursday May 21

Like I said, clear your Thursday nights this month and meet me at Flamingo Cantina. Not sure if they're the official house band (I think they all work there), Austin hypemasters Sinis will blow your head clean off with a shotgun blast of a show straight from the best part of the glam 70's. I normally scoff at the token dancing chicks, but Sinis have found one who should be the leader of the band, or at least get hazardous duty pay. I'm still recovering from seeing them two nights ago as I write this - bust out the Bufferin. Thighmaster and Houston's Spunk soften up the stage.

EVERCLEAR/FASTBALL
Austin Music Hall/Monday May 25

I had the pleasure of meeting Art Alexakis when Everclear last rolled through these parts last winter, and take it from me, you'll never meet a nicer alternative rock guru. That being said, the real attraction of the evening is the victorious homecoming of our own Fastball, whose terminally catchy single "The Way" has recently found its way onto radio playlists everywhere, as well as into MTV's Buzz Bin. Fastball
has become the first Austin band to score a number one hit since...well, since I don't know when, but it's been a long assed time. I guarantee that this show will sell out if it hasn't already. You could think of worse things to do with your Memorial Monday. Marcy Playground, yet another recent alterna-wonder, will open the show.
